چکیده

We revisit a model of feedback processes proposed by Lindzen et al. (2001), in which an assumed 22% reduction in the area of tropical high clouds per degree increase in sea surface temperature produces negative feedbacks associated with upper tropospheric water vapor and cloud radiative effects. We argue that the water vapor feedback is overestimated in Lindzen et al. (2001) by at least 60%, and that the high cloud feedback is small. Although not mentioned by Lindzen et al. (2001), tropical low clouds make a significant contribution to their negative feedback, which is also overestimated. Using more realistic parameters in the model of Lindzen et al. (2001), we obtain a feedback factor in the range of −0.15 to −0.51, compared to their larger negative feedback factor of −0.45 to −1.03. It is noted that our feedback factor could still be overestimated due to the assumption of constant low cloud cover in the simple radiativeconvective model.

An Intercomparison of Microphysical Retrieval Algorithms for Upper- Tropospheric Ice Clouds

U pper-tropospheric ice clouds are important modulators of the Earth’s climate, cover 20% of the globe at any given time (Liou 1986), and occur ~43% of the time in long-term satellite datasets (Wylie and Menzel 1999). Ice clouds, such as cirrus, tend to ref lect less incoming solar radiation and absorb more infrared radiation than water clouds, which are typically optically thicker and occur at...

On moistening of the tropical troposphere by cirrus clouds

Sublimation of ice crystals in cirrus clouds is often invoked as a moistening mechanism for the free troposphere, particularly in the tropics. An alternative mechanism is investigated here: "pumping" of water vapor into the cloudy atmospheric olumn from surrounding regions by diabatic transports resulting from the local radiative effects of the cloud. The effectiveness of this mechanism is comp...

Cirrus cloud optical and microphysical property retrievals from eMAS during SEAC4RS using bi-spectral reflectance measurements within the 1.88 μm water vapor absorption band.

Previous bi-spectral imager retrievals of cloud optical thickness (COT) and effective particle radius (CER) based on the Nakajima and King (1990) approach, such as those of the operational MODIS cloud optical property retrieval product (MOD06), have typically paired a non-absorbing visible or near-infrared wavelength, sensitive to COT, with an absorbing shortwave or midwave infrared wavelength ...

Comparison of Cirrus Cloud Radiative Properties and Dynamical Processes at Two Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Sites in the Tropical Western Pacific

Upper tropospheric humidity plays an important role in the formation and maintenance of tropical cirrus clouds. Deep convection is crucial for the transport of water vapor from the boundary layer to the upper troposphere and is responsible for the formation of anvil cirrus that can spread horizontally over considerable distances and persist for several hours. In addition, recent studies have li...
